"In 1996, 320 murderers in the United States were told they would die for their crimes. But in 2004, the latest year for which complete statistics are available, 125 people were sentenced to death. That marked the fewest since 1977. In Texas, death sentences have dropped from 37 in 1999 to 15 in 2005, the fewest additional inmates on death row since 1991."
